Boccaccia offers intimate Italian dining

Walking into Boccaccia, we felt thousands of miles removed from Chattanooga. Bare bulbs hang from rafters, rough-hewn columns support the ceiling, and exposed brick walls add a level of authenticity that could easily transport a diner to Italy. Twin clocks help, with one noting the time in Chattanooga, the other in Milano.

Lamar’s offers ambiance, comfort, chicken

Reclining on a soft leather couch at a European-style table lit by candlelight, you’ll feel transported to another place inside Lamar’s, a self-described English pub.

Sugar’s moves downtown, looks uptown

Nearly anyone who’s driven through Chattanooga has seen Sugar’s Ribs at the foot of Missionary Ridge as I-24 winds eastward. Signs along the way make it hard to miss.

El Metate offers change of pace from usual grind

When El Metate opened in the Publix shopping center on Hixson Pike more than a year ago, it quickly became my favorite Mexican restaurant in Chattanooga.

View, 'cue big draw for Pigeon Mountain Country Store

When I first signed up to do food reviews, I was hoping to find special, out-of-the-way restaurants where the chefs cared as much about preparing the food as I did about eating it. After visiting the Pigeon Mountain Country Store, I'm one for one.

The Honest Pint offers big ambiance

The Honest Pint arrived in Chattanooga just a few months before St. Patrick’s Day, but it’s right on time for diners who want something more than standard bar food.

One flavorful cut: Multiple dishes

Create a country plate at Dunlap's Cookie Jar Cafe

I'd really rather not talk too much about the Cookie Jar Cafe. It's a great place to eat, but the fewer people who know about it, the quicker I get a table.

Ruby Tuesday's menu takes trip around the globe

Ruby Tuesday, back when it was in Brainerd -- yes, that tells my age -- was a weekly dining destination. It was one of just a couple of fern-bar restaurants, a rage in the 1970s, so it was a favorite of many people in Chattanooga.

Chef Q’s a flavorful kick-start for Rossville’s renaissance

It seems as if the revival of any old neighborhood begins when restaurants move in. Look at St. Elmo, the North Shore and Main Street — all excellent examples of urban renewal and all spurred by the opening of eateries.

Mexican flavor rules at Casa Raul

With Mexican restaurants across the city, it takes a strong recommendation for me to go out of my way for a meal. But I'd heard that flavor rules at Casa Raul.

Pizza just part of the game plan at Hill City

Hill City Pizza opened on the North Shore last month, offering not only really good pizza but a full menu with burgers, rotisserie chicken, salads and burritos. And it recently became the first pool hall on the North Shore, answering a request by many folks for a place to enjoy billiards, beverages and food on that side of the river.
