Amazing adventures

Rock City Enchanged Maize

Another season of corny fun and daring has arrived at Rock City's Enchanted Maize .

If you mastered the Maize last year, don't think you'll be able to run through this year. Every Maize is different, said Rock City spokeswoman Meagan Jolley. This year's design, the familiar "Recycle, Reduce, Reuse" logo, parallels the recycle theme the Maize is carrying this year.

There will be questions along the way, and if answered correctly, your way will be made easier. If answered incorrectly, you may run into a corn wall.

The 10 acres of fun keeps growing in popularity, Jolley said. Thousands are expected to attend this year, she added.

Now in its eighth season, the Enchanted Maize has a couple of new additions:

* Re-Maze is the first-ever recycled maze, made from recycled materials. Visitors are encouraged to bring their empty plastic bottles to help build the Re-Maze. The more bottles guests bring to fill it up, the more challenging it will be to get through the maze. The Re-Maze will show just how quickly recycled products can accumulate. Every piece does make a difference for the environment and for the fun you'll have.

"Rock City is working to be green," Jolley said. "Orange Grove has donated the huge barrels to hold the bottles and help build the Re-Maze. They've also donated plastic bottles to get us started. And on opening day (today), fourth-graders from East Brainerd Elementary will bring barrels full of plastic bottles they've been collecting as a school project."

* Bring your dog -- make sure it's on a leash -- to the Pet Maze and let him try to find his way around.

"Rock City's always been pet-friendly," Jolley said. "And a lot of people have brought their dogs to the Maize in the past, so we thought we'd give them something to do."

Other features include hayrides, Scarecrow Alley, kids activities, live music and food, though you may not want to eat too much before going through Voodoo Bayou. Kids activities include the Cow Train, Pepsi Playground, Fairyland Forest Makeovers, pumpkin painting and inflatables.

Saturdays and Sundays, Mountain Music Folk School will be co-producing the live daytime music on the US-101 Stage. The school is a group of local musicians whose mission is to preserve traditional music and can help anyone get started reaching their musical potential, Jolley said.

In October, the fun transforms into fright at night. After the sun goes down, the Maize mutates into the Voodoo Bayou featuring the Forest of Fear, a haunted house and ghost ride. Due to the scary nature of this ride, parental discretion is advised for kids under 10.
