Movie lovers have a reason to smile.
The Carmike Majestic Cinema, opening Nov. 6, will boast 12 screens, five more than the current downtown Carmike Bijou.
Before the Majestic opens its doors to the public, Carmike will hold a VIP fundraising event Thursday evening to benefit six Chattanooga organizations: Children's Advocacy Center of Hamilton County, Creative Discovery Museum, McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center, Partnership for Families, Children and Adults, T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital and the Tennessee Aquarium. Tickets have sold out.
Creative Discovery Museum will use funds from the Carmike event for support of education and exhibit programs, according to spokeswoman Libby Raiford. "Good for You," based on a book written by CDM programs manager Lynne Mulligan, opens in January. The exhibit is about encouraging healthy lifestyles.
Carmike is helping contribute to a healthier planet with the Majestic. It will be the nation's first green theater, including solar energy panels and energy-efficient light. According to marketing director Dale Hurst, Carmike hopes to have the Majestic LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified by early December.
"We already had plans to either renovate or build another theater," Hurst said. "The whole green concept was taking a foothold. We thought this was the best time to go ahead and comply with all the certifications."
The Majestic will offer a VIP screening room for adult (21 and older) patrons, where moviegoers can combine dinner and a movie with wait-staff service, leather reclining seats, gourmet fare offerings and beer.
