Asian flavors impress at Teriyaki of Japan

Terriyaki of Japan offers a plate of hibachi steak, shrimp and terriyaki chiken with fried rice and vegetables. On the side, above, is an egg roll, spring roll and crab rangoon.

Sometimes it's the most inconspicuous of eateries that make the biggest impressions. Teriyaki of Japan is one that is making its mark in East Ridge.

THE MENU

The menu posted above the counter is not massive, but it's filling. Diners have a choice of chicken, beef, shrimp or scallop teriyaki, or beef, shrimp or scallop hibachi. Sushi is another large selection, but I'll have to leave it to sushi lovers to give their review, though I've heard from some that it's excellent. I do know that it's freshly made, having watched the sushi chef at work, mastering his skill making some beautiful creations.

The order (for three): Hibachi scallop and beef (combination); teriyaki chicken; teriyaki shrimp; egg roll; and spring roll.

Not knowing which to order, I went with one of the hibachi combos and was glad I did. The beef was fork-tender and the scallops small and flavorful, made even more so with the delicious white sauce that came with it. I love that sauce. The chicken in the teriyaki and shrimp in the other teriyaki dish were also tender and full of Asian flavor.

I was quite impressed with amount of meat and seafood offered in each dish, piled high atop a generous plateful of rice or noodles ($1 extra). A good-size portion of steamed vegetables is served on the side.

All dishes are made to order, and it's fun to watch the cook at work at the hibachi grill next to the order counter.

THE SERVICE

I was confused as to what to do when we walked in. After taking a seat, I discovered orders were to be placed at the counter. Then, again, I didn't know if I was to pick up our meals or if they would be brought to the table. A little of both happened. But orders appeared quickly and accurately, which amazed me with just one hibachi chef filling dishes identifying the precise orders with only small colored tags attached to each foam plate.

THE SPACE

Teriyaki of Japan was once inside Eastgate's food court, but now it has a street presence and great new space in the old Wendy's restaurant. Seating is plentiful in the dining area, and large windows let lots of light come through. The restaurant is very simple but clean.

THE VERDICT

As I overlooked the hibachi chef at work, I overheard a customer saying this restaurant was overwhelming East Ridge with good food. I couldn't agree more. Taste and value both come into play at Teriyaki of Japan.
