What to eat for breakfast — or not

By Lauren Winchester

c. Houston Chronicle

When consumed by the morning rush, it’s tempting to neglect breakfast by grabbing whatever pastry happens to be handy. But it’s important to stop and think about what you’re putting in your body.

Eating more healthfully doesn’t mean completely giving up your favorite foods; it just means reinventing them.

Here are a few things you’d like to eat — along with healthier versions.

EAT THIS: Nature’s Path Toaster Pastries

Parents will love that these “tarts” have no artificial ingredients or colors. They cut the fat content by a third, with just 4 grams per pastry.

NOT THAT: Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts may be the better-known brand, but they’re full of faux ingredients and boast 6 grams of fat.

EAT THIS: Bear Naked Fit granola

When it comes to food, the less processing the better. One serving of this whole-grain granola has just 4 grams of sugar and is minimally processed.

NOT THAT: Quaker Oats granola bar

Yes, it’s very easy to rip open a bar and get your breakfast over with. But do you really need its 7 grams of sugar? We don’t think so.

EAT THIS: Thomas whole-grain bagel with Neufchatel cheese

This one wins all the way around. The bagel packs 8 grams of fiber while the lower-fat cheese cuts both calories and fat (70 calories, 6 grams of fat).

NOT THAT: Sara Lee cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese

Sure it’s sweet; it’s got 11 grams of sugar. The full-fat cream cheese has 100 calories and 10 grams of fat.
