Break out the lederhosen. It's oompah time at Rock City.

The Lookout Mountain attraction kicks off its fourth annual German celebration, Rocktoberfest, this weekend, offering authentic Bavarian music, food and fun every Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 25.

"It's my favorite time of year at Rock City," said Mike LaRoche, band leader of the Wurstbrats, one of five bands performing this year. "There's always a lot of people coming out and having a good time."

For six hours, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., the Rock City square will come alive with the atmosphere of a German buddenstrasse (avenue of booths). In addition to grilled bratwursts, homemade sauerkraut, roasted potatoes and specialty beer from Big River Grille & Brewing Works, guests can learn to dance the polka or take part in pumpkin painting.

"Between live German music, polka lessons, kids activities including train rides on the Bavarian Express and the breathtaking autumn views from Lover's Leap, there is truly something for everyone," said Kim Jackson, director of special events for Rock City.

Joining the Wurstbrats on the music schedule are returning bands Laurentz und die Katven and Alpine Mountain Band. New this year are the Atlanta Polka Band and Prost. Bands will play four sessions, and polka lessons will be offered twice each day.

Also on tap is a Beer 101 class Oct. 17-18, taught by David Sharp, Big River's head brewer.

Most activities are free with park admission: $16.95 adults, $8.95 children 3-12.

Rock City is at 1400 Patten Road. For more information, call 820-2531 or visit www.seerockcity.com.
