Today, Bonnaroo kicked into gear and it took on a different vibe from previous festivals.
It is definitely changing. Centeroo was as crowded today as I’ve ever seen it. Since the number of tickets sold is the same (80,000), it can’t be that there are more people.
It would seem that more people are leaving their campsites during the day and entering the main music area to listen to the bands.
From about 2 p.m. on, the place was shoulder-to-shoulder all day. In past years, a stage or two might be crowded, but you could walk between them fairly easily. Not today. It was packed all day.
From the early Gomez set to Al Green to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the crowds have been huge and it seemed more people were streaming in.
Also, their attention spans seemed shorter. In the past, it seemed fans were willing to listen to at least half the set before moving on. Today, and yesterday, a half a song might do it.
Al Green was great, with everyone singing along to hits like “Let’s Stay Together” to covers of classics such as the Bee Gees “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” to Otis Redding’s “(Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay.”
David Byrne, clad in all white from head to toe, literally, thrilled the audience doing a few Talking Heads numbers, including a killer “Once in a Lifetime.”
On the main What Stage, the Beastie Boys were just as entertaining, thought it felt like there was some filler. hip-hop artist Naz joined the trio on stage.
