For all you fans of local music out there in Readerville, I thought now was as good a time as any to catch you up on local music releases so far this year.

The fun started with Americana rock band North American Royalty’s “Miraway,” a 10-track LP released Feb. 8 at JJ’s Bohemia. If you’ve not had a chance to check out the band lately, you can get a sneak peek at a few of the album’s tracks on their Myspace page (.../northamericanroyalty).

The Bohannons followed NAR a few weeks later with “Bright White Light,” a six-track EP released Feb. 28. This follow-up to 2006’s “Songs of the Disenfranchised” was released at a Rhythm & Brews show with Louisville-based soul-punk duo The Black Diamond Heavies before the bands departed on their European tour. “BWL” hasn’t made its way to my hands, but you can listen to three of the tracks at MySpace.

These were just the start. Lately, the local scene has been spilling over with new releases.

Coral Castles’ new EP, “The Corpse & the Cake,” debuted April 3 at JJ’s Bohemia and is already a front-runner for my favorite local album of the year (early into it though we are). With “Corpse,” the local pop quartet has concocted the equivalent of audio Velcro with hook after catchy hook.

Just over three weeks later, the hard-rock band Mighty Sideshow released its third studio album “Charm” on April 25. I haven’t laid ears on this one yet, but again, Myspace is your friend.

Saturday, those of you with an ear for island rhythm can pick up Milele Roots’ first studio album, “Eternal.” While the name may seem more indicative of how long it’s taken for the dub/reggae band to make a studio debut, bassist Christian Craan says that wasn’t their intent. I’ve listened to the first few tracks (of 12 total), and it’s nice to hear Milele sound so polished and tight.

Former Tennessee Rounder Peewee Moore’s new band, The Awful Dreadful Snakes, is preparing to release its first album “soon,” according to the band’s Myspace page (.../peeweemoore). “The Leaving Side of Gone” has been sitting in my iTunes library for weeks now, and fans of The Rounders aren’t going to be disappointed by the twangy vocals, snappy electric guitar and thumping bass line.

Blues-rock band Leaving Miss Blue is preparing to release its first album in July. The members haven’t settled on a title, but the project will be either self-titled or “Future Delta,” washboardist Travis “Tater” Clark said. It’s been three years in the making, but the band is in the mastering stages of the 12-14 tracks.

For those keeping up with Up With the Joneses, you might want to know they’re starting on their seventh release, a follow-up to last summer’s live album. They don’t have a name yet, but lead vocalist/guitarist TJ Greever said the album (an LP) should release late July.

If you’re not able to check these bands out live, you’re missing out, but this list should give you some options for staying hip to the scene.
