One Tank Wonders: FALL CREEK FALLS STATE PARK

Staff File Photo
Fall Creek Falls

2009 Village Camp Road, Pikeville, Tenn.

* Hours: Open 24 hours, but the road leading to the falls is locked at dark.

* Distance/fuel cost: 70 miles from downtown Chattanooga from I-24 North. Take Highway 27 North toward Dayton and follow state Highway 111 North to the park entrance on the right.

* Estimated fuel cost for 140 miles round-trip: $36.38.

* Admission: $15.95 ages 13 and older, $7.45 children.

* Why it’s worth the trip: Visitors can view the highest waterfall in the eastern United States but also have 20,000 acres in which to explore more natural beauty, play golf, hike, fish, eat and find accommodations.

* For the kids: In addition to an Olympic-size swimming pool, with bath house, kiddie pool and poolside snack bar, the park offers swimming at Cane Creek Cascades, the George hole swimming area and the Cane Creek Falls plunge pool. Mountain biking trails, horses for horseback riding and guided caving tours are also available.

* Cost-saving tip: Fourth of July at the park offers a parade of dressed-up cars, bikes and people; watermelon and cake, and activities such as sack races, egg toss, water balloon toss and other family games.
