Riverbend 2008 musical highlights

By Ben Doak, Staff Writer

It’s the end of Riverbend 2008 and time to reflect on the best musical performances of the festival.

Acts ranged from aging rock stars on the mainstage to adolescent hip-hop divas on the Kid’s Talent Stage. Every act I saw is under consideration.

While I can’t speak for everyone or even every act, as several played at a time each night, I will offer my favorites of the festival.

Friday night saw the Black Crowes give an incredibly powerful performance. Lead singer Chris Robinson showcased his ability to command an audience of thousands, offering the rock ’n’ roll swagger of a superstar.

Within the Eddy gave punk a new name at Riverbend, and if their merchandise line was any indication, they won a lot new fans.

Finally, Trombone Shorty graced us for two nights, with his soul-filled performances, and for my money, funk has never sounded better.

This year saw many great performances, and if there were others you might recommend as the festival’s best, I won’t blame you. I only hope that we might witness acts just as great next year.
