Metallica delivers, rains settle in

As pretty much everything else took a break for the main show, meaning everyone in the place it seemed was at the What Stage, Metallica delivered on a promise they’d made earlier.

Drummer Lars Ulrich introduced comedian Chris Rock and promised that not only would Rock knock the crowd on its ear, Metallica would do the same 90 minutes later.

Only he said it differently, but decorum prevents me from quoting directly.

It was no hollow boast.

Rock, performing in front of one of the largest crowds ever for a standup comic, delivered an hour’s worth of material that ranged from politics and the presidential election to relationships to sex. Almost none of it is printable here. While much of the vulgarity and shock-for-shock-sake lines could have been eliminated, it was impressive to watch him hold an audience of that size.

That was not going to be an issue with Metallica, the band many here had come to see. Touring for the first time in four years, the group seemed determined to reestablish themselves as the head headbanger.

They were followed by a really cool set from My Morning Jacket that included a Bonnaroo-ified version of Sly & The Family Stone’s 1969 classic “Hot Fun in the Summertime.”

One of the big events at Bonnaroo is the Superjam, an early morning show with a lineup that is kept secret. I was determined to see it after hearing the rumors that it could include Robert Plant and maybe John Paul Jones, and heck, since we’re dreaming, maybe even Jimmy Page.

I never made it. The rain that seems to have settled in as I write started a half hour before the scheduled start time and while I’d found a dry spot under the tent, several hundred others felt they needed that spot also.

So, I’ve seen Bonnaroo in the scorching heat. Today I’ll see it as a huge mudpit.
