Ticket winners, readers share favorite ‘Roadshow’ Moments

We asked readers to include their favorite item ever appraised on the show on their entry forms. Some of the responses follow:

"Rare authentic CSA Civil War sword, which owner said they hacked up watermelons with as children. Turns out the sword, though authentic and worth tens of thousands of $$ was supplied by an upscale militaria dealer from Pennsylvania for the purpose of driving up its value. The lesson I learned is that there is more than one kind of fake in the antiques world."

— John Smickle, Chattanooga

"New England chest. Great to have the Keno twins describe and tell about it."

— Hilda Atkinson, Signal Mountain

"Letters to family with pictures that give (a) good historical record of how people lived during their time."

— Flora Belle Dean, Rising Fawn, Ga.

"I love the segment at the end with the 'also-rans.' One guy had an item he thought would provide a down payment on a house, but it was worth $150."

— Marie N. Turner, Chattanooga

"I love the old antique furniture. To see the detail and the creativity of the maker blows my mind."

— Mary S. Newman, East Ridge

"(It's) difficult to choose, but (I) would have to say vintage guitars because I love their music and the stories behind them."

— Bill Goins, Guild, Tenn.

"Young girl whose family had found a painting in the trash dump -- the girl had great poise for so young."

— Hal Turner, Signal Mountain

"Confederate quilt -- because of the history it represented." -- Kim Nahay, Chattanooga

"Civil War relics -- because of history and I've grown up near battlefields. PS, I love your show and watch each week." -- Delores Howell, Chattanooga

Irvin Arnold of Rossville was the winner of our online "Antiques Roadshow" tickets giveway. Hal Turner of Signal Mountain also won a pair of tickets through our mail-in drawing.

Arnold said he and his wife had not decided what items they would be taking on Saturday for appraisal.

"Whatever it is, it will be small," he said.

Turner is a regular "Roadshow" watcher and plans to attend with his mother.

"She is thinking about taking some blue and white Chinese porcelain," he said. "I don't know what I might take."
