One Tank Wonders: Ocoee River

By: Anne Braly

Hours: Most raft companies operate seven days a week, rain or shine.

Directions: Take 1-75 North to Cleveland, Tenn., exit 20. Go right about 7 miles to the Ocoee 64 East exit. The river’s about 13 miles up the road.

Estimated fuel cost for 85 miles round trip (based on 20 miles per gallon and $3.90 per gallon): $16.60.

Admission: Rafting trips vary by outfitters and by the section of the river you want to travel. Sightseeing: priceless.

Why it’s worth the trip: No experience is necessary for a fun day rafting on the river. You’ll get to ride the same rapids as Olympians did in the 1996 Olympics. More experienced whitewater enthusiasts might choose to kayak. Even landlubbers will enjoy the area, biking along the trails or just walking. Guided tours are available through several outfitters. There’s plenty to see and do.

For the kids: Ocoee Outdoors offers special whitewater rafting trips for children. Do you know someone who turns 12 years old this year? Give them a free trip on the Ocoee. Turning 6? Same deal on the nearby Hiwassee River. All it requires is that four others in the party are paying rafters. Call (800) 533-7767 and ask for the birthday special. State law requires that children be at least 12 years of age to raft the Ocoee.

Cost-saving tip: Go as a group. Most outfitters offer special rates.
